Do You Need an Industrial UPS for Your Outdoor Application?

Our last blog addressed when an Industrial UPS is required in an indoor application. This blog discusses industrial UPS systems for outdoor applications and what options Falcon offers.
A typical UPS vs. an Industrial UPS
An Industrial UPS is designed very differently than a typical UPS. A typical UPS’s temperature range is limited to 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F) and uses generic VRLA batteries. This is considered an adequate solution for applications in controlled environments, such as a server room, that are not likely to be exposed to temperature variations, severe power disruption or airborne contaminants.
Industrial UPS are ideal for outdoor applications
Falcon SSG and SSG-RP are not office-grade products and are built to handle much more. When an application requires a UPS to be installed in an industrial environment including the outdoors, this translates to wider operating temperatures, unstable power conditions and airborne contaminants. Outdoor environments are typically located at unmanned remote sites, production or manufacturing facilities that may expose equipment to various elements.
Temperature is the leading factor in these types of applications. As mentioned, the typical temperature range of a generic UPS is 0°C to 40°C. Falcon’s SSG and SSG-RP industrial UPS systems offer -20° to 55°C and -30° to 65°C ranges pre-installed in a NEMA 3R rated enclosure. The UPSs are also protected against the elements by using conformal coating for critical circuit boards and powder coating for the chassis. This combination provides a layer of protection against dirt, debris and other airborne contaminants.
We also offer enclosure heaters, air filters and mechanical mounting options to fit most installation requirements. Localized backup power for remote applications is very advantageous. Power conditions can be affected by heavy machinery and electrical equipment causing sags, swells, or transients. These conditions are protected by our industrial UPSs’ wide voltage window and transient protection. The double conversion online UPS topology eliminates these power disruptions and provides clean power to the load.
Our team is ready to help you select the appropriate size, model UPS and NEMA 3R rated enclosure options for this type of application.
